The castle Karlštejn, which occupies an exceptional place among Czech castles, is truly exceptional not only for its historical significance but also for its grandeur and architecture. Construction began in the year 1348 by Charles IV (in 1355 crowned as Roman emperor). The task of defending the royal insignia was assigned to the castle, as well as defence of the most valuable relics of the Roman Empire. The external construction of Karlštejn took more than 10 years. Internal modifications of the Holy Rood Chapel lasted until 1365. The castle's fortifications resisted any and all attacks in its time of greatness. The castle was occupied in 1648, though in some places this Gothic fortress has walls which are 6-9 metres thick. A look up from below is enough to take your breath away, as is the view from above down onto the countryside from the castle palisades.

Here the central coin mint was established, as was a royal seat. Some of the most significant architects of the Czech lands and all of Europe participated in the architectural development of the city. For its vast Gothic and Renaissance centre with so many unique structures and monuments, Kutná Hora was in 1992 honoured by being placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Tour 12 - TEREZÍN

If not for World War II, Terezín would be known "only" as one of the most perfect fortresses of the 18th century. According to the plans of a French engineering school in Mezieres, it was here in 1780 that a mammoth fortification was constructed for 11 years that takes up 398 ha. It was built by the Emperor Josef II and named in the honour of his mother, the Empress Maria Theresa. It was a garrison for 5,655 men but in times of war it could house an army of 60,000 men and 6,500 horses, which could be fed from its reserves for a period of up to 3.5 months. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia the Nazis noticed the "advantages" of the Terezín fortress. They converted it into concentration camp for Jews and its Lesser Fortress into the Gestapo Police Prison. More than 140,000 Jews were concentrated at Terezín Ghetto, 35,000 of which died here. Another 87,000 were deported to other concentration camps after passing through Terezín. At the end of the war, just 3,800 survivors walked away alive. You'll visit the Police Prison in the Lesser Fortress, the Museum of the Terezín Ghetto, and the International Cemetery.

Members of the Rückl family, the owners of the glass factory we take you to today, have been making glass products for centuries. Antonín Rückl built the glass factories in Včelnička (1875), Skalica (1893) and Nižbor (1903). All kinds of blown glass products, Czech crystal, lead crystal, engraved, hand cut, coloured or luxurious glass products were made in those factories. The company had its own permanent representatives in London, Paris, Copenhagen and Hamburg until 1938. The company seized to exist in 1945 due to its nationalization, but the production of Nižbor glass makers continued under the trade mark "Bohemia". Jiří Rück, the great grandson of the founder, has renewed the activities of the company in 1992. Today, the Nižbor glass factory makes the vast assortment of the hand cut lead crystal with simple up to the most complicated decorations. During your visit you will see the complete production process and you will have the chance to buy the products of this unique manufacturer in the factory shop.

Tour 14 - HLUBOKÁ AND ČESKÝ KRUMLOV

The region of southern Bohemia is one of the most beautiful of the Czech Republic. Two major monuments of this region are visited on this trip. The first wonderful place that you will visit is the chateau of Hluboká. Its roots can be traced to the 13th century. In the course of centuries it has been rebuilt several times, the last time in the Romantic style. Hluboká is without a doubt one of the most beautiful chateaux of Bohemia. Its walls and ceilings in the Renaissance hall are covered with noble wood of unusually rich carpentry and carving decoration. Its rooms have beautiful chandeliers, late Renaissance stained glass, Chinese vases from the 18th century, tapestries made in Brussels in the 17th century, and wonderful bookcases and coffered ceilings. We could go on and on. Take a look for yourself... After lunch, in one of traditional Czech restaurants, you'll embark on the second part of your journey, to Český Krumlov. The walk through beautiful Castle Garden with the Cascade Fountain from 1765, Summer Pavilion from 1708 and Revolving Auditorium of the Castle Theatre will bring you into Český Krumlov Castle, the second largest historical complex just after the Prague Castle. You'll still have time to lose yourself in the winding alleys of the historical centre of Český Krumlov, where you'll see Gothic and Renaissance architecture, and dignified monasteries and churches which have preserved their historical roots without disturbing changes and modifications. The importance of Český Krumlov was endorsed in 1992 by inscribing its historic centre, counting more than 300 unique historical buildings, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Český Krumlov is not only a historic reserve; it is a vivid city offering special and unique cultural and social activities.
